SUCCESSFUL LINES

KINO FRANZ'S FAMILY

King Franz, who had a surprise win in the mile and a half event for square-gaiters at Wanganui on Saturday, is one of the many Native King progeny who have won at North Island Meetings.

Native King is by Nelson Bingen from Norice (imp.), who finished second in a New Zealand Cup. He was a high-class trotter, winning a Dominion Handicap. Among his full brothers are Nelson Derby, a brilliant pacer who took a mile record of 2min 9 2-5 sec, and Nelson Fame, another very fast pacer who took a mile and aquarter record of 2min 41sec. The best horse sired by Native King is Native Prince, a good pacer over all distances, a New Zealand Cup participant, and who is now a+ the stud in Australia. Native King's get also include Smooger, Native Star, a first-grade trotter, King's Guard, who is now in metropolitan class, and many others of lesser note. King Franz is out of La Franz, who was got by Franz, a son of Vancleve, whose influence in trotting pedigrees is reflected in the deeds of such great horses as Worthy Queen, Nicoya, Todd Lonzia, First Wrack, and the immortal Australian gelding Fritz, 2min 13sec, an own son of Vancleve. Although he is at an age that does not give him much scope to go far, King Franz will be heard of again as long as the trotting fields remain at. their present strength.

Mr. J. P. Stratton, president of the West Australian Trotting Association, is evidently interested in heavy horses, lor he recently commissioned Mr. Robert A. Smith, of, Los Angeles, to purchase a two-year-old Percheron colt for him. The colt left America by the Maunganui for Sydney, and will be transhipped at that port for Fremantle. Mr. Smith is better known in this country as the selector and exporter of pacing and trotting horses, as he selected Jack Potts, Wrack, Estella Amos, Princess Ann, Judge Hancock, Worthy Bond, Bill B, and Starwyn for New Zealand sportsmen. _^
