FOND OF THE SUN

WHAT THE CENSUS SHOWS

SOUTH ISLAND INCREASES

' Census returns issued today may be interpreted as' indicating that sunshine is a magnet, for the city which has adopted Sol as its tutelary deity comes out with high honours,, showing a population increase of over 10 per cent, since the previous Census. Ashburton has a very similar proportionate increase—which may or may not have something to do with its climate. Sunworshippers will no doubt claim further support for their cult on observing that Waipukurau has grown by over 16 per cent.

Tahunanui, sunny Nelson's seaside resort, which is now a flourishing settlement and growing in popularity every year, shows an increase of 294 in the 1936 Census, a return that will be appreciated by those who are fostering the extensive beach improvements that are now being effected under the terms of a will. Each summer there is a huge drifting population, but the permanent population has now reached 864. This increase is undoubtedly: attributable to the extensive building that has been done in the hillside district of Moana. Picton, headquarters for the Marlborough Sounds, which also has a generous measure of sun, has risen by 101; but the most marked increase in the latest South Island returns is in the Amuri County, which has progressed from 2192 in 1926 to 2669 in 1936. Historic Akaroa, which was the French settlement oh Banks Peninsula, however, has decreased to the extent of 116.

Russell, in the Bay of Islands, famous to schoolboys as the place where Hone Heke chopped down the British flagstaff in 1845 and sacked half the town, but .better known now as the home of big-game fishing, has the moderate increase .in inhabitants of 33. Pukekohe Borough, in the Auckland Province, has risen by 180. Where boundaries have been altered between 1926 and 1936, compensatory adjustments have been made in the 1926 figures.
