LAWN TENNIS

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

TOURNAMENT AT MIRAMAR

In view of the closing of entries in the champion of champions tournament on Wednesday last, many club Championships were played off at the end of last week and the beginning of this week. D. C. Coombe won his Thorndon title on the afternoon before the closing of entries, and Mrs. Latham had only a few hours in which to get her entry in. A feature of the chaiii'pion of champions tournament is the presence of three members of the Perkins family who have earned the distinction of representing their clubs in the contest. Max Ferkinsis the holder of the Hawke's Bay Club championship; his sister Lorraine has won the Island Bay Club championship, and his brother Roland Ferkins holds the University Club and Wairarapa titles. Two weeks ago we prophesied a return to form on the part of Roussell, ■who had. just been defeated by D. C. Coombe and J. Charters in ranking matches. Roussell had been playing too much, and the delays of the Wilding; Shield contest in Christchurch because of the weather did not improve his play. Roussell has justified the prophecy by winning the final of the Wellington Club in conclusive fashion, defeating D. C. Coombe in three sets. This is Roussell's sixth year as holder of the title. He will retain the Powdrell Shield after next year. Two days after his match with. Roussell, Coombe defeated D. G. France in the final at Thorndon. Coombe has been playing exceedingly well lately, and if he retains his form will be a strong competitor in the New Zealand championships next year.
