AMERICAN ARMY
RECORD VOTE FOR
PEACETIME
HUGE BATTLESHIPS URGED
WASHINGTON, March 9. The House of Representatives today approved a record peacetime army appropriation of 545,000,000 dollars, including 7,000,000 dollars for fortifications at Hawaii, the Panama Canal and on the Pacific Coast. Mr. Cary, chairman of the Appropri-
ations Sub-committee, said it was pres pared to report a 540,000,000-dollar Naval Bill providing for the construction of 333 aeroplanes, 12 destroyers, six submarines, and other craft. It is understood that the Navy Department urged the committee, in the event of a collapse of the London conference, to authorise the early construction of the largest battleships the world has ever seen.
