"STATE SALARY REQUIRED"

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Permit me to use your columns to voice a protest against the practice which obtains of including in advertisements "state salary required." Particularly is this the case in advertising for clerical assistance, and it can be done only with the objective of inducing applicants to state as low a salary as possible. Every job is

worth so much and the advertiser knows what he is willing or able to pay and should state it. If the applicant considers it too little he or she can say so, and the employer can then consider if the applicant is worth more.

Another practice, at interviews with principals, is to ask, "How much are you getting in your present post?" It is an. impertinent question which invites the applicant to overstate the case. Employment is a- contract, not a favour on either side, which should be honourably made and honourably kept.—l am, etc., ,

FAIR DEAL.
