UNOFFICIAL TESTS

JUX.C. v. NEW ZEALAND

GOOD FIGURES AND POOR

(By "Not Out.")

Although all four matches between the present .M.C.C. touring team and New Zealand have been drawn and New Zealand has in some matches caused the visitors no little concern, there is striking evidence of the capabilities of members of the English team in the averages for the unofficial Tests. Moreover, separating, these matches from others, a, different light is thrown on the performance of some; of New Zealand's players. The figures make an interesting study. .

1 On the- M.C.C. side there are three players with batting averages of over GO and five more with averages of over 26. New Zealand's larger batting list shows Kerr and Vivian as the outstanding pair of batsmen, though, of course, not a few of the others were lacking in opportunities. Of those who played in more than one match five have averages of over 26, with Kerr at the head of the list showing excellent figures and Vivian also prominent with a record of consistency. In the bowling department Read stands out on the visitors' side, his figures being splendid—seventeen wickets tat an average of 17.11. Baxter and Simj are also prominent, but Parks and Larigridge have been somewhat expensive. However, the New Zealand bowling list shows.how some of the bowlers have been hammered, Merritt's one wicket having cost 105 runs and Cowie's one being taken at a cost of 182 runs, while nearly 200 runs were hit off Elmes, who took only two wickets. Against those figures, there are some which make much better reading. Blundell, who, has made a habit of getting some early, wickets cheaply, heads the NewJ Zealand bowling averages with 19.50; Eoberts is next with a bag of ten at' 23.40; and then follows Griffiths.
