GENEROUS SUBSIDY
EIGHT-OARED ROWING
AN AUCKLAND OFFER
Eight-oared rowing, which, it has been stated, would increase considerably the public interest in inter-club racing, has prompted Mr. C. G. Herdman, of Auckland, to make the generous offer of subsidising by £10 the cost of every eight-oared boat, whether new or second-hand, that is put on the water during next season. This offer, which is open to all clubs in the Dominion, was contained in a letter received by the management committee of the Wellington Rowing Association last evening. "As a small endeavour to further eight-oar racing in New Zealand, I have great pleasure in informing you that, as an incentive and encouragement to clubs to obtain their own eight-oared boats for use not later than during the 1936-37 season, I make an offer to all j clubs throughout New Zealand who are eligible to compete in open competition, to subsidise the cost of each boat with a £10 donation." wrote Mr. Herdman.
"This applies both to new or secondhand boats, my main object being to add every boat possible as soon as possible (hence the time restriction) to those already available for competition, so that eight-oared class events may soon be an accomplished fact at all regattas." It was decided to thank Mr. Herdm'an and to circularise all clubs affiliated to the Wellington Rowing Association.
