SYNOPSIS OF LAST 24 HOURS.

A rather Intense westerly depression crossed tho Dominion during the night, while an anticyclone has been advancing across the Tasman Sea on to the northern districts. Moderate to strong north to west winds prevailed yesterday, reaching gale force at times during the uight in the Cook and Foveaux Straits areas, but by this morning the direction had become more generally westerly and, in places, south-westerly. Rain has fallen at many places in districts with a westerly aspect and in the far south, and some hail showers have also occurred in tho latter area. East of the main ranges, however, the \wather has continued to bo mainly fine and temperatures generally have been mild to warm.
