LAVINA'S SECOND WIN
FIFTH RACE YESTERDAY
BY TELEGRAPH. (Special to the "Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, February 3. The fifth race of the Sanders Cup started at 10.45-a.m. in a light northeasterly over a windward and leeward course starting in Orakei Bay, the weather mark being the flashing buoy in the Rangitoto Channel. Auckland crossed first, followed by the Val, Avenger, Lavina, and Irene in that order. All worked short boards down towards the Tamaki clubhouse and then stood over towards Beari Rock. The positions changed considerably on the beat out, the Aileen and Lavina leading most of the way, with the Lavina doing better than usual. Haltway out she was in the lead, but tne wind had no heart in it at any time. The weather mark- was rounded as follows:—Lavina, llh 52m 20s; Aileen, llh 55m 40s; Avenger, llh 57m; Val, llh 59m 10s; Irene, 12h llm 10s. . On the spinnaker run to the Orakei mark the Lavina held a straight course, but the Aileen kept more to the soutn and did better, passing the Lavina off North Head, where the Wellington boat lost the wind for about two minutes. The first round was completed as follows:—Aileen, 12bi 54m 4s; Lavina, lh 5m 7s; Avenger, In 6m 4s: Val, lh 10m 30s; Irene, lh 14m 40s. The Aileen made a long board towards Bastion Point, but with only a mile of the second round sailed the time limit expired at 1.45 p.m. and the race was ° The resail started at 3.6 p.m. off Orakei over the same course jas m the morning. There was a good sailing breeze from the north-east, much stronger than in the morning. The Aileen luffed across the line first, followed very closely by the Irene, Avenger, Lavina, and Val, all within 20sec. After a short board to starboard all stood down the harbour for their mark, which they were laying better than in the morning, with the wind more to the north. Passing Bean Rock on their way out the Lavina drew clear of the fleet- to leeward and was going through the water faster. The Avenger was doing well and holding a better wind than the others, gradually , working out to windward. The Irene was next, with the Aileen and Val about a minute astern. The breeze now freshened and came from due north. _ Nearing the weather mark the Aileen improved her position and the Lavina -more than held her lead from the Avenger on which the others gained a little, especially the Irene. The Aileen again slowly improved her position, overtaking the Avenger before reaching the weather mark. There she challenged the Lavina, but Johnson kept on the Auckland boat's weather. The two were very close. The times round the weather mark the first time were: ~ h.m.s. All made good time in the fresh breeze. The Aileen ran dead astern of the Lavina, both going a little off the direct course, and the Aileen drew slowly up on the Lavina, both being over a minute ahead OI trie Avenger. Nearing North Head, with half the lee run covered, the Aileen and Lavina were at very close quarters, and for half a minute the Aileen was ahead of the Wellington boat. Her lead was short lived, however for the Lavina drew clear ahead again and ran very fast for the lee mark. The times for completing the first run were:— h. m. s. Both came about to port three minutes later and made a long leg of nearly two miles towards the weather mark. Both.the Lavina and Aileen increased their lead from the Avenger, Irene, and Val. The Lavina stood across and came up m a windward position. She continued to increase her lead on the Aileen. The Avenger was making up distance, but there was no change in the order, and rounding the mark for the run home the Lavina was a minute ahead of the Aileen. The times were:— n. m. s. Half-way in the Aileen drew up 18sec on the Lavina. Both made little gain from the Avenger.
