ATHLETICS

MEETING AT BASIN

FINE MILE BY WILSON

5 The finest performance in any atht letic event in Wellington this season x was that made by the provincial mile champion, A. H. Wilson, in winning the mile at the meeting conducted at the Basin Reserve last evening by the ; Kiwi Amateur Athletic Club. 3 Giving away big starts, Wilson - caught his field in the final lap and - sprinting the last 70 yards won by four yards from L. S. Black in 4min 27 3-ssec, the fastest time returned.for the distance in Wellington this season, it was an impressive run on a track which had been well soaked over the weekend. The majority of the events were particularly well contested, the men's and women's sprint races and the quarter-mile producing especially close finishes. The times, too, lOsec and 11 3-ssec, in the sprints were excellent, though the respective winners had generous handicaps. IMPROVING HURDLERS. The 120 yards hurdles also produced a spirited contest, H. M. Abraham, an ""Proving University Club hurdler, with syds and a hurdle down, winning by a long yard from the national champion, P. S. Bowie; and J. McDonald Bowie and McDonald, both on the scratch mark, jumped the ten flights of hurdles together, the former's superior pace on the flat just giving him the advantage over his opponent in the run-in. McDonald has shown a marked advance this season, and all ne is Jacking now is speed between the obstacles. If he concentrated upon short dashes during the next fortnight he might well win the provincial an,a Possibly the New Zealand titles. • i£ c key to the abbreviations shown m lT the results is as follows:—Wellington (W.), Combined Old Boys (O.B.), University (V.), Kiwi (K.), Scottish (S.), Hutt (H.), Miramar (M.).
