(By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., January 23. The Domijiion croquet championships opened today in fine weather! with lawns on the keen side. Surprises during the day were the defeat of Stratton in the first life of the men's championship by Bryan, Palmerston North. In the second round of the men's championship (first life) Hartnell beat Ross. Mrs. Petrie (Feilding) beat the holder of the title, Miss Skeet, in the second life of the women's championship. Results are as follows:— Open Championship. (Best of three, games.) First Round.—A. G. F. Ross beat'H. P. Stratton, 9-26, 26-7, 26-18; Mrs. Gambrill v. Mrs. Thomson (in progress), one game each, 26-19, 19-26. Men's Championship. First Life. First Round.—F. C. Bryan beat H. P. Stratton, 26-11; H. A. Perm beat R. W. McCreath, 26-12; E. W.
