AMATEUR ATHLETICS

LOWER HUTT MEETING

SUCCESSFUL VENTURE

E. J. WINTER IMPRESSES

The Hutt Amateur Athletic Club has every cause to congratule itself upon the success which attended its venture in conducting a meeting under floodlights at the Hutt Recreation Ground last night. The perfect evening, together with the novelty, and the presence of the New South Wales polevaulter E. J. Winter, and several' New Zealand and provincial champions, attracted an enthusiastic crowd of some 1500 people. The lighting, which was produced by acetylene flares, was good, but it could have been better, and the club, profiting by experience, intends, using several additional lamps at its next gathering. FINE VAULTING. Great interest naturally attached to the appearance of Winter in the pole vault. His opponents were two brothers, W. H. Roberts and B: Roberts, of Masterton, who both retired after clearing 10 feet. Winter commenced jumping in .earnest at lift, and 'successively cleaVed lift 6in, 12ft, and 12ft ljin. He made no attempt to clear a greater height; in fact, this was impossible since the bar was then precariously balanced on the top of the uprights. . Winter's display was an outstanding example of what can be done by close application. Despite the handicap of an uncertain light he gave a delightful exhibition of vaulting, the ease and grace with which he' performed making the accomplishment of, 12ft IJin appear an easy task. The spectators were thoroughly appreciative of his visit, loudly applauding him. The high jump event, too, in which the national champion, T. J. Crowe, and Winter competed, attracted great attention. Both men were successful at sft B£in, but with the bar at sft BJin Winter, although almost over on two occasions, found the height just beyond him. Crowe, with a fine jump, was successful at his second attempt. The crowd again was not slow to show its appreciation of both jumpers' performances. . SPIRITED COMPETITION. Other events productive of spirited competition were the 100 yards final, won by A. Hill in the fast time of 10 seconds (a yard would have covered the entire field), the sprint hurdles, in which the national title-holder, P. S. Bowie, defeated the New Zealand University champion, J. McDonald, by inches, and the half-mile. In the lastnamed race W. peg, the provincial champion, and E. Forne, winner of the mile, and runner-up in the, 880 yards at the last New Zealand championships, were both on the scratch mark. Ogg quickly caught his field and held a comfortable lead coming into the straight from Forne, but the latter,' with a fine burst, caught his opponent to defeat him by a yard in an exciting finish. ~. .■•■ . . .-.,-■ The mile was won impressively by the provincial champion A. R. Wilson in 4min 31 4-ssec. Among the women, Misses J. Crampton and T. Greenfield, winners of the 100 yards and 120 yards respectively, showed good form. An interesting competitor was the former, New Zealand champion and Olympic representative, Miss T. Kench, who was making her first appearance of the season. FRASEB CUP CONTEST. The most successful cyclist was C. McGurk, who won the Fraser Cup awarded to the rider gaining most points in cycling events at the meeting. He won the mile and the threemiles in fine style. The winner of the road race held in conjunction with the gathering was B. Buchanan, who defeated A. L. Stevens, in the smart time of 53min 42sec. The event attracted a * field of nine, the runners, after doing a lap of the Recreation Ground, proceeding to a point just beyond Taita and returning over the same course...At the turning point Buchanan was leading Stevens by 15 yards with the rest of the field close

up. Three miles from home the two leaders gradually opened up a gap and entered the ground with a lead of 60 yards over Hiscock, with C. McCalman 150 yards further back. This was maintained to the finishing line. Prior to the commencement of the meeting the Mayor (Mr. J. W. Andrews), in a brief speech, welcomed Winter to Lower Hutt. Mr. Andrews also started the first heat of the 100 yards handicap. The Fcaser Cup was presented by the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash), who congratulated the Hutt Club upon its initiative in holding a night meeting, and wished it every success in the future. THE RESULTS.
