The Evans Buy yacht Mayfair, owned and sailed by E. Beck, won the honour uy a single point from the Heretaunga Club's new boat, the Idle Along, owned and sailed by Mr. AH. Harvey, who designed the class. The Unique, of Heretaunga, was a close third. Points gained by the boats are ss follow, E.B. indicating Evans Bay, H. Heretaunga, W.B. Worser Bay, and P.N. VJ, 1 Vampire (E. 8.) 11 I Gladys (P.N.) 5 | Mabelle (W. 8.) 1 ' j The first trial was held on Saturday J afternoon, with two others yesterday morning and afternoon respectively, j On Saturday afternoon a hard northwesterly, wind and a correspondingly boisterous sea gave competitors a difficult time and called from them their { utmost sailing skill. Incidents and mishaps .were frequent. The Kathleen had her bowsprit wrenched out by a sudden gust which nearly tore out her chainplates, the Dora capsized, and the Gladys went to her rescue, the Rebel struck trouble in the shape of a capsized 14-footer in Oriental Bay, and the Mabelle found full sail more than she could hold. Yesterday's wind was a rather easier one, though still brisk in the morning. For various reasons a number of skippers did not start in the final race. The first race was mainly a dmgdong struggle between the Mayfair and the Idle Along, after the two had made a comparatively poor start. The Mabelle and Nahlin were prominent early, but could not hold their lead from the shrewd sailing of Beck and Harvey. The Dora chased the leaders for a while, with squally winds and big seas providing thrills for all concerned. The Mabelle had to retire, almost full up, and the Dora capsized. Finishing times were:— Mayfair, 5h 32m 34s , 1 Idle Along, 5h 33m 27s 2 Unique, 5h 40m 19s 3 Rongomai, 5h 41m 59s 4 Nahlin, 5h 44m 14s 5 Vampire, 5h 44m 23s 6 Dorothy, 5h 50m 7s .'... 7 Kathleen ° Rebel 9 Dora, capsized Gladys, withdrew. Mabelle, withdrew. Again in the second trial the Mayfair forged ahead to the lead, which she maintained all the way. The Gladys capsized. An interesting fight for positions took place among the backmarkers, the Dora, Unique, Idle Along, Nahlin. Kathleen, and Dorothy. Finishing times were:— Mayfair. 12h 52m 35s '. j Dora. 12h 57m 25s 2 Unique, 12h 57m 30s a Idle Along. 12h 57m 31s 4 Nahlin, 12h 50m 43s 5 Dorothy, lh 2m 16s 0 Kathleen.. lh 2m lGs 6 Rpngomai, withdrew. Though a delay of ninety minutes was made in the starting time oi Hie final race the weather was stiil fairly vigorous during the contest, in which only seven boats started. The Idle Along was the shining star, going into an early lead and heading the field all the way. The Mayfair was only an also ran, sailing into fourth place to gain just enough points to give.her top position on the championship table.
