HUNDRED-GUINEA CUP
GIFT TO WELLINGTON CLUB
ADDITION TO CUP STAKE
. As a compliment to the splendid acceptance that has been received for this year's Wellington Cup, a valuable trophy has been donated to the Wellington Racing Club to be added to the stake. The trophy is a handsome gold cup of unusual design, mounted on a light oak plinth and encased in a light oak box. The donor, one. of the oldest members of the club and a friend of the president, desires to remain anonymous. ■
The cup is an exceedingly fine specimen of the goldsmith's craft. It is of solid gold, and its value is to be assessed, for. the purpose of the Rules of Racing at lOOgs, though it is understood that its actual cost was somewhat higher. This will increase the value of next week's big race from £600 to £705. It was a completely unexpected gift, the club being unaware of it till yesterday afternoon. In handing over the trophy the donor mentioned that he always had considered that such a race as the Wellington Cup should carry a trophy. He had been particularly impressed by this year's splendid acceptance for the event, and to assist in making the prize fit the merit of the performance that the winner will have to put up he had decided to give the cup. He thought that those owners who had been so generous in response amply deserved this further recognition from one of the club's oldest members.
The trophy will undoubtedly add great additional interest to this year's race, which promises to be a wonderful contest with its field of a score. It will be presented to the owner of the winner immediately after the race.
