HUTT RIVER TRAGEDY
AN OLD CONTEMPTIBLE ,
Strenuous application of artificial respiration by a Wellington constable was of no avail yesterday afternoon when Wiliiam a plumber, of 19 Sidey Street, Wellington, was pulled out of deep water in the Hult River. He' was a w.ell-built man and a powerful ' swimmer" and his sudden disappearance in the water is attributed to heart seizure. An inquest will be held later. . .
Mr. Hillock was spending, the day with "his family at Silyerstream ■ and entered the water at about 5,45. Holi-day-makers were numerous at the time, but most of them were on the bank farthest from the scene of • the fatality. When Mr. Hillock suddenly sank-in lift of water, however, his plight was noticed by Mr. Glen Jones, a Wellington resident, who immediately went to the rescue .and succeeded in. bringing the bather to the surface and getting him to the bank. Constable A. D.. Adlam, of the Mt. Cook Police Station, tried for more than 20 minutes to. resuscitate Mr. Hillock, but without success. The Wellington Free Ambulance was called at. 6.20 and took the body to the morgue at Wellington. Mr. Hillock,' who was well known in Wellington, was one of the Old Cont.emptibles and fought with a Welsh regiment during the Great War. He was aged about 50.
