Most of the fatalities were attributable to automobile' accidents caused by the blinding snow and the icy roads, but many deaths" were due directly to exposure. Sub-zero temperatures, which are continuing today throughout the Middle West, reached 22 degrees below at Devil's Lake, North Dakota, while temperatures of 10 degrees below were common.
