CANINE WAIFS
MANY MISSING DOGS
OTHERS SAFELY BOARDED
For the officials of the Tailwaggcrs' Club the Christmas holidays are not synonymous with leisured ease. On the contrary, lost dogs and dogs (and cats) that need temporary homes provide them with more than their fair share of work for this time of the year. During the last few days 35 dogs have been reported as lost by their anxious owners, quite a few of the straying ones being country cousins who were probably scared and bewildered by Wellington's thundering trams, unceasing rush of traffic, and the strangeness of their surroundings generally. So far no great progress has been made towards their recovery, but that is only^ to be expected in a ; time of abnormal living, when the only things of real importance to the great majority of the public are eating, drinking, and sleeping. When the city returns to its normal routine -people will take the trouble to notice .the canine, ~.waifs> and report their ywhereabouts to the Tailwaggers. ■ * vAbout 50 animals have had their .holiday boarding arranged for them by the-club, the number including about 'ten cats;! The Tailwaggers no longer conduct their own animal boarding establishment, but they inspect private ■ establishments for the care of dogs and cats and recommend them to those of the public who want someone to look after their dumb pets in their absence;, "Dogs are easily boarded out, but, cats, which apparently involve a much greater responsibility, are not- so - easily placed. , The price per week :is from-about ss.for a small dog ; to 7s 6d for the sort that sleeps in a kennel like a garage. j.Somemembers of ..the public are apparently ■under the impression that the club can wave;; a, magic .wand and produce food, and lodging for dogs at no cost ■whatever,:. Unfortunately, a dog is a hearty eater, and must also be subject to supervision, services for which the charges made for boarding the animals are entirely reasonable.
In the,two or three 'days before Christmas 'the:; club- had a man and a dog|6ri ;the:city streets collecting for its worthy cause, and it acknowledges with (gratitude ; the response of the public. '"- '".i.f •'■'.'■.. :•'".■•
