HUTT VALLEY AND MERCANTILE LEAGUE

In their annual match at Athletic Park yesterday, the Hutt Valley Cricket Association and the Wellington Mercantile. League representative teams both batted well Winning the toss, Hutt Valley had nrst use of an easy wicket. Their opening pair, Sharpe and Halligan were together for 75 minutes before Sharpe was caught behind by Nickless oft Herd's bowling. Tyrrall joined wailigan, and the score was advanced to 87, when Tyrrall was clean-bowled by Johnstone. This was the score at luncheon. Wilson and Halligan (not out the attack after lunch, and Wilson was •at once aggressive, frequently hitting to the boundary. Wilson was at the wickets for only 18 minutes, and scored 29 runs, taking the total to 122. Harvey was the newcomer, and the score was pushed along steadily by a series of singles. Harvey lost his wicket when he jumped out and missed, Nickless whipping off the bails. Halligan had meanwhile reached his half-century, which had taken 155 minutes. Dudley came on, but after scoring 17 he was neatly snapped up in the slips off McKeown's bowling. Webster joined Halligan, who was then run out when Webster called for a run. Halligan was at the wicket for 195 minutes and scored 59. Cale was the next man in, and the score was advanced to 185, at which stage Webster was skittled by Herd. H. N. Jones (captain of the Hutt Valley team) assisted Cate to hoist 200 but almost immediately afterwards he was given out lbw. Wood joined Cate, who was clean-bowled with the score at 219. T. Jones, the last man, joined Wood, who then opened out, hitting four successive boundaries. Wood was giving the best display of the innings, his runs resulting from splendidlytimed strokes. The innings was closed when Jones skied a ball to McKeown Wood being unbeaten with 26, and the total 251. Herd was Mercantile's best bowler. The innings had -lasted. 225 minutes. \ Mercantile's opening batsmen were Ramsay and Barr, the latter, however, having a. short stay, Wood bowling him cleanly in his second over. at which stage Dudley, a slow bowler, was brought into the attack, and his second delivery found Cullen's stumps. Darragh did not last long, T. Jones finding a hole in his defence. McKeown was facing the attack, and a lucky snick past Webster in the slips brought Ramsay up to face the slow bowler. Ramsay skied the first delivery of his second over, and Halligan took the catch. 71-4-30. Ramsay had played an attractive innings. Robinson filled the breach, using the long handle effectively. McKeown lost his wicket in Dudley's third over, when he gave Tyrrall a chance of stumping. Torrington joined Robinson, who was dismissed with the score at 106-6-19. Johnstone partnered Torrington, this pair retrieving the position by forceful batting, and at stumps they had added •41 runs to the score, making it 147 for six wickets. . Details are:— HUTT VALLEY.
