ENGLISH BOWLERS

FATHER AND SON

Two' English bowlers, Mr.- C. P. Cross, and his son,- Mr. K. I. Gross, ara at present in Wellington. They took part in the percentage fours game last Saturday on the Wellington Club's upper green, and were officially welcomed during- the* tea interval by Mr; Arthur Jacobs, club' president. They propose to stay in New Zealand until April next, when they return to-Eng-land. Mr. Cross, sen., is a vice-presi-dent of the Hampshire County Bowling Association, his fellow-vice-president being Mr. G. W. A. Wright, an international skip, who is not to be confused with Mr. George Wright, the. skip of the English section of the British team which toured New Zealand in 1926. Both visitors are members of the Ryde Club,, Isle of Wight, arid of the Cosham Club, which is situated on the northern end of the city of Portsmouth. The Ryde Club has two greens, ona of which is laid down in the famous Cumberland sea-drenched turf and the other with turf taken from the downs or hills. This 'latter turf is preferred by some bowlers, so Mr. Cross, sen., says, to the Cumberland turf. The Cosham Club has a membership of between 60 and 70 and the Ryde Club numbers about 80 members. Home greens are much slower than New Zealand greens, and the .visitors did not find it easy to accommodate themselves to the Wellington Club's green, which local players considered was on the slow side after the, recent rain. The English playing season lasts from May to September, when New Zealand greens are undergoing their annual top-dressing. Mr. Cross and his son are anxious to take part in the Dominion bowling tournament at Christchurch next month, and inquiries are being made to see whether this can be arranged. There is no doubt-that if this can be done their presence at. the tournament will lend an added interest to the gathering, and they ' will be heartily welcomed by thtf other participants. ' ■
