STUDY OF DIET

BENEFICIAL WORK

INVESTIGATIONS AT OTAGO UNIVERSITY

Miss Violet Macmillan, the holder of the Sarah Ann Rhodes Scholarship for Domestic Science, who is now situated at Studholme House, Dunedin, and is working at Otago University in the home science department, was in Wellington on Saturday, en route for Tauranga, where she will spend the holidays with . her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Macmillan. She mentioned that in studying diets at the university special thought was given to the fact that various complaints are too common in New Zealand, especially in regard to teeth. The idea had occurred to one of the staff that it would be a good plan to offer prizes for the home study of diets, and five of the leaders had combined and had offered prizes consisting of £5, £.3, and £1 Is for a complete menu for a week—the foods to be either cooked or raw. Expense was,to be considered, and mention made of casual visitors and extra meals. There was'a good demand for forms, and 140 were issued. Accurate records were asked for, though the weight of ingredients, etc., was not essential. Ten of the entries were excellent, and were so good that the awards had to be reconsidered, and after much difficulty two were placed as equal. Both the winners were men, one a policeman and the other an engineer. The remaining eight j were women, and it was arranged to give a small prize to 'each. The records were particularly interesting.
