HAWKE CUP MATCH
MANAWATU V. RANGITIKEI
(Special to the "Evening Post.") PALMERSTON N;, This Day. Owing to the fact that .the- dates offered by Manawatu '(December 24, 25, and' 26) were not acceptable to South. Auckland, who wanted December 25, 26, and 27,. the latter have lost, the,ir place as this season's first challengers for the Hawke Cup. Their place will be taken by Rangitikei. Nelson were given the right of the first challenge against Manawatu. with South Auckland the right of meeting the winners. For yaribus reasons, however, Christmas week did not suit Nelson and they changed places with South Auckland. Manawatu are- anxious that the match should start on December 24, as Molohey will be called to Wellington on December 27 for the Plunket Shield game, and as they are already without the service of Hallamore and Mufchison, they do not want to be.weakened any more. In regard to the. deadlock between Manawatu and South' Auckland, it is interesting to recall that four years ago when Manawatu were invited at two days' notice to take the place of a challenging team, South Auckland would not agree to Manawatu's request that the commencement of the match should be postponed for one day. On, that occasion seats could not be booked on the train,so Manawatu were obliged to stands or. sit on luggage all the way up to Hamilton, arriving there, a • few hours before 'the game was due to start., ■'■'.■
Manawatu will be represented by W. E. Norris (captain), D. A. .R. Moloney, M. A. Ongley, G. Robertson, G. Berquist.A. Cutler, K. Olliver, C. McVicar, N. Gallichan, K.- Hatch, and I. Hearsey, with A. Penman as twelfth man.
Mr. A. M. Ongley, sole selector, announced last night that H. Lambert (Hawke's Bay) and J. H. Marshall (Rangitikei) will not be available for the country team to meet Wellington on Christmas Day and Boxing Day Their places will, be filled today.
