Blewitt, had a narrow escape from serious injury late on Saturday night. . Blewitt saw the cyclist approaching and ordered him to stop. As the.cyclist drew level with the inspector he raised the javelin to the extent of his arm arid brought it down with considerable force. Taken by surprise, the inspector just managed to grasp the javelin and avoid being'struck '.on ' the head or shoulder. The cyclist carried on, and the inspector was able to wrench the javelin from his grasp. The..; cyclist wobbled badly but did not lose control of his machine. The inspector could not give chase. .There was no one about, and, although a'car was stopped by the inspector a few minutes later it was hopeless to cttempt to chase the cyclist.

"There is no doubt that he meant to strike me," said BlHrttt. "When I examined the javelin afterwards I realised what a nasty injury it could have inflicted if it had hit me on Ui« face or body."
