H.M.S. ACHILLES

REPLACING THE DIOMEDE

CREW TO TRANSFER ,

H.M.S. Diomede, at present employed under the Imperial authorities on special service, is not to return to New Zealand but is to proceed direct to England as soon as she can be spared.

In making this announcement yesterday, the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones)1 said that it wW originally intended that the ship, would return to New Zealand to refit prior to sailing for the, United Kingdom to turn over to H.M.S. Leander in May, 1936. It had ' been' found convenient; however, to accept the offer.of ' the Government in Great Britain to commission H.M.S. Achilles early, in. 1936 as a ship of the New Zealand division. H.M.S.. Diomede wpuld; therefore! be relieved by that ship and the New Zealand crew of the Diomede, .together with any loan Imperial, naval ratings who had not completed their service on. the' New Zealand Station, would transfer to H.M.S. Achilles. -' "'

The Minister stated' that no actual dates for the arrival of.the Diomede in England or for the arrival of the Achilles in New Zealand have yet been fixed.
