TRIAL BY PEERS
DE CLIFFORD CASE TODAY
MAX BE LAST OF ITS KIND
LONDON, December 10. The trial of Lord de Clifford on Thursday on a charge of manslaughter will probably be the last time on which S peer will be arraigned before his peers.
The Marquis of Huntley in the House of Lords today moved that it should not be obligatory for peers to wear cocked hats in addition to robes.
The Lord Chancellor, Viscount Hailsham, expressed, the opinion that there was much to be said for the view that this method of trial had outlived its usefulness. Their lordships might perhaps think it desirable on an early occasion to express an opinion to'that effect, but so long as. the old method was maintained it might be consonant with the dignity of the House to conform to custom.
So the peers on Thursday will wearcocked hats.
