WOMAN'S IDENTITY
Mystery surrounding a dead woman's identity was cleared up at a Mitcham, Surrey inquest. At the opening of j the inquest a woman, who died in the street, was stated to be known as Mrs. Mabel 'Gladys Maltman, of Rowan i Road, Mitcham. A telegram from the Jersey police, however, stating that the man alleged to be her husband had declared that his wife was with him in Jersey, caused the Coroner to adjourn the inquest. The woman was buried the following i day, the inscription on the coffin being ■ "Mabel Maltman, 32." j At the resumed hearing Thomas' Hugh Maltman, a salesman, of Patiev, j Jersey, was called. J Coroner: Was the woman who has been mentioned, and who is alleged to have been Mrs. Mabel Gladys Maltman, your lawful wife?— Yes. Therefore the information you gave to the police at Jersey was incorrect? - Yes. The Coroner announced that he would now issue a death certificate that the woman was Mabel Gladys Maltman, the wife of Thomas Hugh Maltman, and she died from natural causes.
