LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

A very cheery atmosphere prevailed at the final meeting for the year of the Island Bay-Berhampore Branch of the League of Mothers. ' Members and friends gathered in large numbers to enjoy a very fine programme arranged by Mrs. Batt. Visitors from Hataitai, Ngaio, Khandallah, Petone, and Wellington South were welcomed by the president (Mrs. Hindmarsh), who spoke briefly of the real spirit of Christmas.

Elocutionary items by Mrs. Martyn Williams were enjoyed and solos by Miss Mona Greene, and. duets by Mrs. Duncan and Mrs. Eweh proved very popular. A branch member, Mrs. Lyon,. read. a. short,. but. extremely in.teresting,. paper, on boys, founded on sound theory-backed by actual'experience. .A group of committee members sang.a two-part .song "Holy NigHtV' and a carol. Different dnembers were. v called on to relate a humorous story,. much i merriment, resulting. . I Afternoon tea was served.

The judges were Mr. Waugh (flowers and vegetables), Miss Copper (decorative section), Mrs. Boyce (cooking section). The amount derived from the competition for the Christmas cake (donated by Mrs.-Rogers and Mrs. A. R. Jones) will be divided between the four institutes, the winner being Mr. Weare. •
