CLOSING-DOWN FUNCTIONS

After having been in existence lor over -half a century, Clyde Quay School, for which thousands of old pupils will ever have lingering memories, will close its doors for. ever next Thursday, as the new central fire station is to be erected on the site. Last evening the committee of the Clyde Quay Ex-pupils' Association held a meeting at the school to make arrangements for a closing-down- function. Mr. A. R. Hislop presided. Representatives of the Home and School Association and the school committee were also present, It was decided that there shall be two gatherings. The first is to take place at the old school at 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, when the members of the two associations and the committee and the present pupils will assemble in one of the largest rooms after having been summoned by the ringing of-the bell by the first schoolmaster,: Mr. W. T. Grundy. The Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, is to be invited to speak, and addresses will also be given by the chairman of the Education Board, Mr. W. V. Dyer, and' the president of the Ex-pupils' Association. After that the gathering, together with the present pupils of the school, will march in procession to the new school in Elizabeth Street, where they will be received by the headmaster. A social gathering will follow, and .each, of the present children will receive a bag of sweets.

The same evening at 7 o'clock -expupils and friends will assemble once more at the old school, when" further brief addresses will be delivered, one, it is hoped, by the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, Attorney-General, who. is. .an ex-scholar of the school. Mr. Griindy, who will ring the bell for the.. V last time, will also speak, The gathering [Will afterwards adjourn to the Elizabeth Street School,.where asocial gathering will be held.. Mrs. Martyn Williams, an old pupil of the school, is to be asked if she will arrange a musical evening. Light refreshments will be served.
