KARORI SCHOOL
SUCCESSFUI: FETE
FUNDS FGR RADIO SET
A successful fete, with the object of raising funds, for the purchase of a radio receiving set for "the Karori School, was held in the school grounds yesterday afternoon. The fete was opened by the Minister of Education (the Hon.. P. Fraser), who made his first appearance at a public gathering since his appointment to the Ministry. Mr. R. A. Wright, MJVfor Wellington Suburbs, was also present.
Mr. H. L. P. Dyett, chairman of the school, committee, who presided, welj corned the Minister. Mr. Dyett said he felt sure that the" Minister would agree with him when -he said that the participation of parents in school affairs had been of inestimable benefit to the cause of education. Parents had supported improvements in the schools and grounds; they had assisted the library scheme, the funds for undernourished children at the Otaki openair school, and the scheme of the free issue of milk.
The exclusion of the five-year-olds was a great blow, said Mr. Dyett. The closing of the Training College was another blow, and they asked whether it was not time for its reopening. Parents were concerned'at the large numbers in many of the classes,: and were critical of the rationed-teacher scheme. School had. the greatest difficulty hi keeping,, schools dean, and in providing' winter fuel under the present allocation.
