AN OUTLET WANTED
HUGE STRAWBERRY CROP
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
NELSON, December 10.
The strawberry crop in the Nelson district has been very heavy this year resulting in low prices of 6d and 4d per pound. The one factory In the district buying strawberries had obtained its requirements by last Friday and announced that no more purchases would be made this season. As the growers still have large quantities of the fruit available a message was sent to the Prime Minister (Mr. M. J. Savage) advising the position in regard to the cessation of factory purchases, and drawing attention to the fact that many tons of the fruit had not yet been harvested. The urgency of the matter to the small fruit growers was stressed and an investigation to see if something could be done was suggested.
The Prime Minister replied today stating that he had discussed the matter with the Minister of Agriculture, who was investigating means of meeting the position.
It is understood that the Motueka factory has reopened for the purchase of strawberries at 3d per lb, a reduction of Id per lb on the previous price paid.
