ELDERLY MAN REMANDED
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
HASTINGS, This Day.
An elderly retired, farmer of Raupare, who has had an attendant for some time, and whose name was suppressed in the meantime, was charged before Mr. J. Miller, S.M., this morning with attempting to murder his wife at about 9 o'clock last night by cutting her throat. The woman is now making satisfactory progress in hospital. The accused was remanded for a week for an alienist to investigate his mental condition.
Senior-Sergeant MacNamara said it was alleged that the accused, who was nearly 70, attacked his wife and cut her throat while she was writing a letter. The attendant, who lived with the accused and his wife, was out of the room at the time. He heard screams and when he went into the room he saw the wife with a gash in her throat. The police and a doctor were summoned.
The Magistrate said the facts suggested that the accused was mentally unbalanced, a view which he found supported in a Supreme Court order relating to his property. After the alienist's report was received, if the accused stood his trial, his name could be published. Till then it was right that his name be suppressed.
