SOMES ISLAND
AS A PICNIC RESORT
At a general committee meeting of the Beautifying Society the Somes Island sub-committee reported upon its activities since the last meeting. During the recent election campaign it had written to candidate asking for support in the effort the society was making to obtain the use of the island as a pleasure resort for the people of Wellington and district. The Hon. W. Nash, who .had supported the society previously by introducing a deputation to Ministers in the previous Cabinet, replied promptly that he would do all he could to obtain the use of the island for the people. Since Mr. Nash has taken his seat in the Cabinet he has publicly commended the proposal.
A resolution was passed thanking the Minister for the enthusiasm he has shown in the matter, and the promptness with which he has given his support to the project.
Members, in speaking to the resolution, stressed the fact that the people in the Wellington district had far too long been deprived of the use of the island, and that there was a consensus of opinion of citizens and residents of the Hutt Valley and other surrounding districts that the Government should be urged to open the island to controlled use by the people this summer.
