FOX GLACIER TRAGEDY
SOLO TRIPS BY GUIDES
The recent tragedy on the Fox Glacier, in which Guide Christie lost his life, was referred to at a meeting of the committee of the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand. The
circumstances of this accident and the
regular practices pf guides in the Alps vV were discussed at length. Mr. R. Syme ri considered that some action must be \. taken to protect and help those guides
,'. who themselves realised the risk they *'. ran in making such solo journeys. /, Mr. Syme moved, and Mr. A. P. Harper seconded, the following motion, which was carried: "That this committee is of the opinion that solo trips by guides place them under unnecessary risk, and this opinion be conveyed to employers of mountain guides throughout New Zealand for their consideration with the suggestion that, where such is not already the practice, an endeavour should be made to ensure that in future guides should always work in pairs."
