FIRE AT RAWENE
OPIUM RAID AT AUCKLAND

AUCKLAND, This Day.
Hot opium pipes, prepared opium, and other paraphernalia were seized by detectives when raiding a house in Nelson Street. As a sequel three Chinese appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court this morning. Ah Gin, aged 29, a gardener, was charged that being the occupier he used the premises for opium smoking. Ah Lie, aged 28, a cook, and Chan Dick, aged 39, a fruiterer, were charged with being found in possession of prepared opium. All pleaded guilty.
The police said the raid was made on the morning of December 5, entry having to be forced. The premises were in a filthy condition.
Chan Dick was fined £25 and 10s costs; Ah Lie, who had been previously convicted of smoking opium, was fined £30 and costs, and Ah Gin, who also had been previously convicted, was fined £70 and costs.
TOWNSHIP WITHOUT LIGHT

WHANGAREI, This Day,
Spender's garage and the township's electric supply station owned by that firm at Rawene were burnt to the ground early this morning. All the vehicles garaged were removed, but the lighting plant was destroyed. The insurances on the garage and plant total £2145. Efforts are being made to secure a temporary lighting service for the township.
