STRAINING AT A GNAT.
A New Zealand exporting house was recently called upon to pay a penalty of 10 per cent, of the invoice value of a shipment of a New Zealand product, due to a breach of Section 304 of the United States Tariff Act, reports the Auckland Chamber of Commerce journal. This Section provides that imported merchandise and containers must be properly marked to indicate the country of origin when imported, the marking to be in legible English words. The initials of a country are not acceptable under this Section, and the New Zealand Company referred to, by branding the goods with the letters "N.Z." instead of "New Zealand," was called, upon to pay a substantial fine.
