NATIONAL GOVERNMENT RESIGNS

MR. SAVAGE TO FORM MINISTRY

SWEARING-IN ON FRIDAY

SELECTION OF NEW CABINET

The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) waited upon his Excellency the Governor-General (Viscount Gahvay) at Government House this afternoon and tendered the resignation of himself and the members of the Government. His Excellency accepted the resignation, and, on the advice of Mr. Forbes, will send for the Leader of the Labour Party (Mr. M. J. Savage) and invite, him to form a Ministry. Mr. Savage, of course, will accept the invitation when he waits on his Excellency at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning, and at 11 o'clock on Friday morning he and the members of the first Labour Administration will attend at Government House to take the oaths of office.

The members of the Labour Ministry were announced at the caucus of the Labour Party last evening and were unanimously accepted. Yesterday morning caucus gave Mr. Savage authority to select his colleagues and the selection was announced last, evening. Interviewed last evening, the Labour Leader said that he was not yet in a position to announce the personnel of the Ministry, and would not be able to do so until he had interviewed his; Excellency.

A caucus of the Nationalist Party was held in the Prime Minister's office this morning. Amongst those present were two defeated members —the Hon. C. E. Macmillan and Mr. J. A. Nash—and the Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. R. Masters). Two absentees were Mr. J. A. Roy (Clutha) and-Mr. Tiu Henare (Northern Maori).

Main interest centred on the selection of the Leader of the Opposition, but at 1 o'clock Mr. Forbes said the matter had not been decided. Caucus was to resume this afternoon, after Mr. Forbes had tendered his resignation and the resignations of his colleagues.
