NERVE INSTITUTE

NEW LONDON BUILDING

A new £180,000 building, to house an institute for the teaching and study of neurology, is to be built by the National Hospital for Diseases of the Nervous System, in addition to their present building in Queen Square, Bloomsbury, London, says the "Daily Telegraph."

A conditional offer of £60,000 towards the cost of the new building and equipment,' and a further £60,000 towards the endowment of research, has been received from the Rockefeller Foundation. The condition is that the remaining £120,000 be subscribed in England within two years. An appeal for this sum is to be launched by the Earl of Athlone, president of the hospital.

The building is to contain observation rooms, laboratories, surgical units, lecture and demonstration rooms, rooms for private patients, . and accommodation for increased staff.

An official of the hospital described the present accommodation as "quite inadequate."

"I have just been present at a discussion in which twenty-six young doctors were taking part," he said. "Most of them had come from overseas. They were in a tiny room of a seventeenthcentury mansion in Queen Square. "About 400 doctors attend the lectures each year, and return to their homes to teach others what they have learned. Many of them are sent by the Rockefeller.

"The new building will contain the only medical school of its kind in the world."

Increased use of wireless sets is stated to have made mill whistles unnecessary in the North of England.
