OCTOBER ACTIVITIES

The monthly meeting of the Wellington branch of the Plunket Society was held on November 1, and was presided over by the president, Mrs. Jowett. The matron of the Sir Truby and Lady King Karitane Hospital reported that during the month 21 babies and' 9 mothers had been admitted, and 20 babies and 10 mothers discharged, leaving 22 babies and 2 mothers in hospital. Six premature babies were admitted and one had been''discharged. All these babies were bemg fed with mother's milk and it was hoped that all would be breastfed eventually. The average length of stay, in hospital was 28 days for babies and 13 days for mothers.- Nurses Manoy and Gow had completed their training, and Miss Thompson had commenced hers. Many overseas visitors had visited the hospital during the month, and had been most interested in the work they have been shown there. The Plunket nurses' report stated that in spite of the wet weather it had been a very busy month, with the largest number of new baby cases since October and November of last year. The attendance at the ante-natal department had also been high, only two previous months this year having been'heavier. The ante-natal .section handled 33 new cases, and had 144 under supervision. In the post-natal section new cases in the city and suburbs and outstations were 136; 1443 visits were paid to homes. Visits paid to Plunket Rooms in the suburbs, outstations, and headquarters were: Adults 2348, babies 1996, children 290.
