CALIEXTFS TROUBLE
EVIDENCE OF INTERFERENCE
(By Telegraph.) (Special to the "Evening Post.")
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
| The Auckland mare Caliente, who had shown signs of lameness earlier in the week thought to be due to muscular trouble in the hindquarters, appeared to be walking quite soundly this morning and there was no evidence of trouble following her fivefurlong gallop, which was done quite freely. Unfortunately, when she returned to her stable, her owner and a veterinary surgeon being in attendance, there was definite evidence in the mare's condition that all was not right with her.
Caliente has for some time been one of the favourites for the New Zealand Cup and her chance undoubtedly looked bright. Now, however, there is considerable doubt whether she will even be able to start.
There is reason to think that the mare has been interfered with, and that she has swallowed something deleterious which has burned her mouth, whatever other ill effect it may have had.
The case is in the hands of the police.
