HEALTH STAMP FUND

TODAY'S STREET COLLECTION

Mary up to a late hour this afternoon had a little lamb, and wherever Mary went the said lamb had no option but to follow, seeing that it was tethered to a post on a lorry which was conveying Mary and several little playmates through the principal streets of the city. The lamb's ultimate fate, whether it is roasted and consumed with mint sauce, new potatoes, and green peas, or whether it continues to be a pet lamb until such time as it reaches maturity, depends upon the guesses made as to its weight. The person who correctly guesses the lamb's weight is entitled to take the animal or £2 in cash.

All this is part and parcel of today's street collection in aid of the Health Stamp fund. The lamb in the lorry had a floor of sand which it did not appear to find very appetising, but the children with it, with their spades and buckets, found the sand to be an excellent substitute for the real seashore, and the obvious enjoyment which they derived from playing in it was a reminder to citizens of the-joys awaiting other children through the operations of the health camps. A clown with megaphone, quips, and blandishments, and others with collecting boxes, gathered in the shekels as the lorry moved through the streets, a red-coated band in an advance lorry heralding the approach of the lambladen lorry.

In the meantime on the pavements willing collectors have been busy all day selling badges and collecting spare cash, so that when the day's total receipts come to be added up a substantial sum should have been realised for a very deserving cause.
