Special forecast for Wellington:— Strong north-westerly winds, but southerlies again later. Weather cold and changeable,
and occasional showers are likely
The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for north-westerly winds at first about Cook Strait, but otherwise south-westerlies will be prevailing. Winds will be moderate to strong generally, with gales in places about Cook and Foveaux Straits. The weather will be fair at first in eastern districts between East Cape and Banks Peninsula, but will otherwise be changeable with scattered showers. Temperatures will be cold, and hail is likely on parts of the Otago coast.
A secondary depression has quickly followed the main one which crossed the Dominion yesterday, but an anticyclone now extends over the northern part of the Tasman Sea on to northern New Zealand. The weatheras a whole has been cloudy and changeable with scattered rain in most districts, although in eastern areas only a few light showers have fallen. Winds have been moderate to strong generally and by yesterday evening southerlies had extended over most of the Dominion. This morning, however, there was a temporary change back to northerlies about Cook Strait and along parts of the East Coast of the South Island.
Auckland had misty and showery weather yesterday morning with a moderate westerly wind, but the weather during the afternoon was fair when the wind changed to the southwest. Some show,ers fell last night, but the weather there this morning was fair with a south-westerly breeze.
Wellington had a fine and pleasant day with 8.2 hours of bright sunshine. A light northerly breeze prevailed, but about 5 p.m. a southerly sprang up and conditions became cloudy and threatening. Only a trace of rain fell, however, and that about 11 p.m. Early Ihis morning the wind veered to the north again.
Christchurch had fair but cloudy weather yesterday with a strong southwesterly wind. By 10 p.m. it was calm, however, and this morning's weather was overcast.
It was unsettled and showery in Dunedin during the morning, but the affernoon was fair. A moderate southwesterly wind prevailed. At 9 a.m. today it was fair with a light northeasterly wind.
