WHANGAREI MEETING

HORSES IN LIKELY FORM

(Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, This Day.

The acceptances for the opening of the Whangarei Racing Club's Spring Meeting at Whangarei tomorrow are very good, but they are not so many as usual, and, therefore, with the usual crop of dual and triple engagements, it is reasonable to expect a good many withdrawals. Reports from the north indicate that the course is in good order. Win-and-place betting will be in'operation, with the club displaying a dividend calculator, lor the first time:

The class in the main race tomorrow, the Whangarei Cup, is very good indeed, and would not be out of place on any course. Monanui had her first races of the season last month at Ellerslie, and she ran very well under difficulties. Last autumn she won at Whangarei, with 9.7, and then won the Nolan ' Handicap at Ellerslie, so with 9.0 she is not out of the Cup this time. Monanui is also topweight in two other events, but unless she takes on the mile, in which she is also well placed, she should be one of the favourites for the Cup.

Baroscope has always gone his best races under light imposts, and now within a couple of pounds of nine stone one or two horses below him may be better fancied. However, with a weakened field his chance would come again. Gay Broney raced well when he made a recent reappearance, and as he has already indicated that he is at home at Whangarei he may be the really dangerous candidate. Bonny Gay has disappointed, though she is a good galloper under wet conditions. Bronze Tray showed some of his, old pace upon his belated return a few weeks ago, and he should be at his best now. There are prospects in the second half of the handicap, but their chances would depend to a good extent upon the last-minute defections among the other half.

Take Boughal and British Columbia out of the Manaia Handicap field and there is very little left. The two topweights represent class, and they will still be reckoned with. King Mestor haa not shown his best form for some time, and only if a course of schooling has improved him would he have to be considered—and that element w.ill not be learned till the race is over. Crooning is speedy,'and this field will suit her. Ballymoney and Belkryrian are very fast hacks who might bother the two tops with their weight. Roman Mascot has.run one or two good races in splendid sprint company, and may be the surprise packet. Usually one horse stands out in the plate contests at Whangarei, but tomorrow's Spring Plate is a real puzzle with Valrent, Enlightenment, Racing Lady, Vera Acre, Valise, and Tidalia having shown a lot of pace at Avondale and Ellerslie this spring.- The other events have filled fairly well, and will produce spirited contests. ; Form horses engaged tomorrow are the following:— Spring Plate.—Tidalia, Valrent, and Vera Acre. Hikurangi Hack Handicap.—Teddy Boyi and Enlightenment. Huanui Hack Hurdles.—Merry Lap Hawthorn, and Tea Chat. Whangarei Cup.—Gay Broney, Monanui. and t Bronze. Tray. County Handicap.—Royal Potoa, Tondaleyo, and Dayform. Kensington Hack Handicap.—Belkyrian, Ballymoney, and Abbey Fcale. Manaia Handicap.—British Columbia and Boughal. Parahaki Handicap.—Velocipede, Monanui, and Bronze Traj'. The card is:—
