[Published by Arrangement.] JERSEY HERD

The Jersey herd of Messrs. W. H Booth and Sons, Carterton,. is one of the most line-bred herds in New Zealand. The breeders have succeeded in concentrating the strong features of the old Monopoly blood, as exemplified in the Sunflowers, Primroses, and Victorias. For many years, sires were exchanged with the late Mr. H. E. B. Katson, and later, when he sold his herd, "Middle Run" heifers were sent outside to imported sires, with a view to keeping in touch with the best blood on the Island of Jersey. It was also desired to thus keep close to the Island type, and, by breeding back, to retain the sound points of the old Monopoly blood. "Middle Run" heifers were sent to "Vagabond of Oaklands" at New Plymouth, and with him a champion yearling was secured, while many of the cows at the next "Middle Run", sale will be in calf to this great sire. The breeder's latest purchase to continue their sound system of line-breeding is a bull from "Rewa Freckles" C 587 fat), sold to Mr. H. Bell, of New Plymouth, at the last sale at "Middle Run." This ■bull, Pinewood Standard Lad, is by Brampton Standard Compte from Standard Comotesse. 9331b fat as a five-year-old—indeed an excellent test. This record was made by Bull and Son, Canada, and the yearling heifers to be sold at the forthcoming "Middle Run" sale will be in calf to this sire.
