GISBORNE SENTENCES
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
GISBORNE, This Day. In the Supreme Court Mr Justica Smith sentenced Rawiri Grant, aged 49, to six months' imprisonment, the terms to be concurrent, on each of two charges of carnal knowledge. The Judge commented that it was difficult to deal satisfactorily with cases where the parties were Maoris and where there seemed to have been grave lack of parental control.
For breaking and entering and theft Rata Wahanui, aged 21, was sentenced to three years' reformative detention, the Judge remarking that a stringent sentence was necessary as the prisoner since 1933 had embarked on a career of crime.
Mayor. He though the Trades Hall ran the Labour Party, meaning the leaders. The rank and file might not know that Mr. Sayegh was not wanted as Mayor. The case was adjourned.
