ISSUE OF WRITS
STATUS OF MEMBERS
NO OFFICIAL STANDING
With the issue of the election writs yesterday, Parliament automatically was dissolved, and all members of Parliament ceased to enjoy official standing as such. Incidentally, they alsr lose their emolument as from yesterday,' but those who succeed in having themselves re-elected on November 27 will be recompensed to the extent of their back pay. •
The custom, of course, is to concede immediate past members, as it were, the courtesy title of M.P. Actually at the moment they represent no one but themselves ( and the party to which they happen to be affiliated.
Cabinet Ministers, on the other hand, retain their full status as members of the Executive Council and as the Governor-General's advisers. His Excellency is never without his advisers. If the Government happens to be put out at an election, the members of the Executive Council meet to clean matters up and formally hand their resignations to the Governor-General. After that the machinery is set in motion for the formation of a new set of advisers.
