MORE VOTING STRENGTH

FIGURES COMPARED

GAIN IN SUBURBS

A substantial increase in the aggregate voting strength of the1 five Wellington electorates is disclosed in the final electoral figures, which were made available today after the closing of the supplementary rolls at B p.m. yesterday. Compared with the figures for the 1931 election there will be 4894 I more votes available. The increase has by no means been ' distributed uniformly over the five ! electorates. Wellington Suburbs, with lan accretion of 2147 additional votes, had gained the most, with Wellington East, showing an extra 1796 votes, next in order. The other three electorates have each added just over 300 to their 1931 totals. The big gains in the Suburbs and East, with their bigger voting strength when compared with the remaining three, point to the popuj lation drift. There is a big discrepancy between the size of the supplementary rolls this | year and those of 1931. The explanation is that severe purging of the rolls during last April, May, and June effected a big reduction in the main roll, and this had to be adjusted in the supplementary rolls. In 1931 there was only a very slight purging,' which did not make heavy inroads on the main roll. The following tables compare the rolls for 1935 and 1931:— MAIN ROLL. 1935. 1931. Wellington North .. 7,926 12,374 Wellington Central . 8,159 12,858 Wellington East ...: 12,901 14,843 Wellington South .. 9,618 12,547 Wellington Suburbs . 14,098 15,482 SUPPLEMENTARY ROLL. 1935. 1931.
