SHIP-BUILDING ORDERS
ACTIVITY IN BRITAIN
MORE WORK FOR THE YARDS

RUGBY, November 2.
Greater activity in. shipbuilding in reported. Last month orders were placed for 43 vessels, of which 32 are for British owners. Out of 275,000 tons gross, 154,000 are for motor-ships and 121,000 for steamers. It is expected that further substantial orders will be placed in the near future, for although ships of nearly 800,000 tons gross are still laid up in Britain, some 1.300,000 tons of the existing mercantile fleet is over twenty-five years old.
Naval work has brought orders to Tyneside estimated at over £7,000,000. In the last month one yard has secured contracts for two destroyers and one cruiser which will keep it occupied for more than two years and give employment to 2000 men. Yards at Sunderland have received six new contracts in six days, including one for two 4000-ton colliers and one for three 9300-ton motor-ships.
