Today was nomination day for the General Election, which takes place on November 14. About 1315 candidates were nominated for the Cls seats. Of this total 582 are supporters of the National Government, including 512 Conservatives, 44 National Liberals, 20 National Labour candidates, and 6 others. Unopposed returns, which number 38, include the Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Baldwin, -or Bswdlcy, Worcestershire, and the President of the Board of Trade, Mr. Walter Runciman, for St. Ivcs, Cornwall. As a result of the unopposed returns the state of parties in the new House of Commons to date is: Conservative 22, Liberal Nationals 3, and Labour 13. Each candidate must deposit £150 with the returning officer, this sum being returned to those who obtain more than one-eighth of the total poll in their division. At the last General Election £12,600 was forfeited by candidates. The deposit system Was introduced to prevent frivolous candidature. In the last election 65 members were returned unopposed. The final and most strenuous phase of the election campaign begins today, and the leaders of all parties have a very full programme of speeches to deliver.
