DENIAL OF LABOUR SPLIT

Those returned to the House of Commons unopposed include fourteen occupants of safe Conservative seats-and thirteen Labour members, representative mainly of Welsh constituencies, who held large majorities, some of whom were unopposed in 1931. Sir Ronald Ross, Conservative member for Londonderry, was unexpectedly returned unopposed owing to the breakdown of a motor-car which, caused his intended Republican opponent to arrive breathless when nominations had just closed. • • -.^ Labour candidates total 552 and Liberals 154.
