CAMPAIGN: FOR FUNDS

A well-attended meeting of representatives of various organisations In Eastbourne was. held in the local Council Chamber on' Wednesday evening to set iip a-committee for the launching of a campaign to raise funds' for the Children's Health Camp, Thq Mayor (Mr. "E. 'W. Wise) presided. Apologies for unavoidable absence were received from Councillor Margaret Magill, Mrs. Girdlestone, Misses Jackson and Cheyne, the Rev, C. R. Kreeft, and Councillor A. Macandrew. Mr. B. P. Lenihan (Postmaster), the convener of the meeting, read correspondence from the honorary Dominion organiser giving suggestions for the raising of funds, and stating that the amount aimed at in the Dominion was £10,000. Mr. Lenihan explained that a certain delay in calling the initial Eastbourne meeting had been unavoidable, but that nevertheless he had already received promises of the utmost support for the movement from practically every organisation in the district, and indications were that Eastbourne's quota would compare very favourably with those from other districts. On the motion of Mr. W, Hutchings, the following committee was set up, with power to add to their number:— The Mayor (Mr. E. W. Wise), chairman (representing" the Eastbourne Borough Council and the .Masonic Lodge), the Mayoress (Mrs. E. W Wise), Mr. B. P. Lenihan (honorary treasurer), Mr. E, J. Appleton (honorary secretary and organiser), Mrs. Mather (representing the Eastbourne Mothers' Union), Mrs.' Thornton (Boy Scouts . Group), Mrs. D. N. Isaacs (Plunket Society), Mr. W. Wilson (Muritai School Committee), Mr. w. Hutchings (Croquet Club), Mr. A. J. Hollis (Eastbourne sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association), Mr. w. Phillips *(Eastbourae Rugby Football Club). Dr. D, N. Isaacs (Eastbourne Bowling Club). Various ways and means of raising funds were then discussed. Letters were read from Miss E. Cheyne, honorary secretary of the St. Ronan's Girls' Club, and from Mr. R. E. Mayer, honorary secretary of the Eastbourne Rugby. Football Club, assuring the committee of the fullest support from their organisations, Councillor Margaret Magill, who was a member of the executive of the Wellington Health Camp Assciation for-a number of-years, wrote asking to be included In any programme decided upon as heir heart was in the movement and she knew the • great need for carrying- on the' good work. •In addition-to arranging for entertainments, it was decided that a "house to house" canvass for ■ the gale of Health Stamps be made, as it is considered that an appeal of this nature would receive the wholehearted support of the citizens, ■
