Business men are surprised at the force of his attack against the antiJewish campaign. Meanwhile Herr Streicher, who is directing the anti-Jewish drive continues his campaign. He said at Magdeburg: "If there is a God, then the most glorious German nation will overwhelm, its mortal enemy." . The "News-Chronicle's" Berlin correspondent reported on August 21 that an open quarrel x which might have far-reaching consequences to the Hitler regime had broken out between Nazi extremists led by Dr. Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda, and Dr. Schacht, following Dr. Schacht's speech on August 18, which Dr. Goebbels ordered, to be heavily censored before publication, especially a portion in which iJr. Schacht openly attacked extremist Nazis whose violent methods, he said were hindering Germany's economic recovery. Dr. Schacht was supported by powerful conservative industrialists and also the conservative element of the Reichswehr. He said he intended to place before Herr Hitler the realities of the situation and would also further attempt to persuade Herr Hitler to call off the anti-Jewish campaign. It was reported that he was ready; to resign unless he was assured that Germany's serious economic situation was secured against disturbance by vio« lent outside elements.

In the speech in question* Dr. Schacht, in opening the East German Fair, attacked Herr Streicher's Jew<. baiting methods, and declared that the Nazi programme, while debarring Jews from comradeship and citizenship admitted them to the operation of laws which were now toeing framed, and therefore Jews could uot arbitrarily be victimised. This also applied to the religious question. Germany stood: mir'.way to the greatest task in history, ard whoever interfered with the Government's policy did a dangerous thing. Priests must not intermingle in pc litics. Jews must realise that they were no longer dominant in the leadership of the State. No individual action must solve these problems. The people's earnings were safe, but rigorous economy^must be exercised.
